Growing up, I had a serious fear of deep water. So, when I decided to pursue a master’s in marine biology, it came as quite a shock to my family — especially my mom, who was understandably worried about how I’d handle a field that required getting out on the open sea. But sometimes, life throws you challenges that lead to unexpected growth.
At Steindler’s Lab, I was lucky to be part of an incredibly supportive team who encouraged me to face my fear and experience life on a research cruise. With their reassurance and the saying, “Victory lies beyond fear,” echoing in my mind, I decided to give it a shot.
The cruise itself was surreal. With the help of Dr. Eli Shemesh, the Lab Manager of Deep Med Lab, I quickly found my rhythm. He guided me through the intricacies of working on a research cruise and even introduced me to his Mediterranean vegetable salad, which quickly became a team favorite.
Looking back, I’m glad I took the leap. It was a powerful learning experience, and I’m definitely more open to being part of future cruises. 👇🏼
The picture shown below, captures the joy of successful CytoFLEX results from dust samples - a reminder of how research students find happiness in even the smallest achievements. The lab’s flow cytometer had been giving us some technical trouble just before I started my experiment. After working through a few technical fixes, I finally got it up and running, and to my surprise, the results came out well on the very first run. It’s moments like these that make the challenges of research all the more rewarding! 👇🏼
